The Material - Timber

Durable

Hardwood is strong enough to resist harsh weather and is by far superior to softwood, which should never be used on external fenestration products.  Our hardwood windows carry long guarantees against warping, shrinking and twisting, and against infestation and some rot.

Traditional

For those who must adhere to strict style guidelines, such as those applying to listed or period properties in conservation areas, hardwood is an essential material.   Other property owners often prefer timber to any modern alternative materials.

Reduced Maintenance

Timber windows can be factory painted for a guaranteed long lasting finish, they can be painted by hand once installed or can be left natural, stained or varnished, with stunning results.

Timber windows nowadays are treated to ensure a long life expectancy without need for major maintenance work.  With care, timber windows can last for a hundred years or more and this is born out by the vast number of very old houses with original windows still installed.

Environmental Considerations

Henry James is very aware that sourcing of timber is a controversial issue in the construction industry.  We ensure that timber we use is from sustainable environments and we take steps to ensure that this continues.  We endeavour to ensure that all our suppliers work within sensible and safe environmental guidelines.
