Frequently Asked Questions
Do your sash windows look truly authentic?
This is the question on most people's minds when purchasing a sash window for a period or traditionally built property and it is increasingly important to those building new homes in authentic style. This page shows timber original sash windows, new timber sash windows and new PVCu sash windows. We don't think you will be able to tell the diffence.
How easy to use is the fire escape?
A child can be taught to use this facility - although we don't recommend that young children know how it works to avoid the danger of falling. There are restrictors to prevent small children from opening the window wide.
Simply undo the cam locks, which can be locked with a key, although this is not essential, slide the brass knob to disengage the sash from the frame, and open the window towards you. The size of the aperture will depend on the size of your window, but in most cases it will accommodate a large adult and allow immediate access to safety.
Can we have a fire escape on aluminium or timber windows
Yes, all our windows are built bespoke so they can be built to your specification.
<h2>Why is the Elegance range only available in whiteWe use profile only from well trusted sources and our supplier insists that the Elegance range - which is the most traditional - is seldom required in anything other than white. The Universal range is very similar to the Elegance and we have found that customers looking for highly authentic windows in colour or in woodgrain are pleased with the Universal option.
Can you supply (or fit) only
We are very happy to provide windows on a supply only basis. We do recommend that customers ensure that their installer is highly competent as windows must be fitted correctly to avoid warranty issues.
We can arrange to fit sash windows not supplied by us, but will only offer a fitting guarantee in these circumstances. We sell a high quality product and know that it will behave beautifully for many, many years and will look as good as new for even longer. We are unable to guarantee such with a 3rd party product.
Do your PVCu sash windows have cords
No, our windows have internal balances which ensure smooth operation and trouble free use. Although traditional cords can be problematic in that they may eventually deteriorate, our timber windows are available with cords should they be requirement.
What gives your PVCu windows the period look
The most significant period features are the style and attention to detail in the frame (profiles). We ensure that, with or without the deep bottom rail, our PVCu windows have sight-lines as close to traditional lines as possible. In addition, authenticity is enhanced by decorative horns on the top sash, high quality hardware and Georgian bars - available inside the glass if preferred or outside as they were in years gone by. We ensure that the Georgian bars, if attached to the outside, are strong enough to withstand man-handling.
